How this Australian tax calculator works
A free income tax and take-home pay calculator for Australian residents, using the 2026–27 financial year rates. Free to use, no sign-up, nothing stored.
What makes this one different from most: every box works in both directions. Most calculators only go one way — you put in your gross salary and they tell you your take-home. This one lets you type into any of the fifteen boxes. Know your take-home pay but not your gross? Type the take-home figure and it works backwards to the salary that produces it. Same for the tax amount.
You can also switch between yearly, quarterly, monthly, fortnightly and weekly, so the figure you have on hand is the figure you can enter.
What it includes
- Income tax at the resident marginal rates for 2026–27
- Medicare levy, including the phase-in for lower incomes
- HECS/HELP compulsory repayment, applied at the correct marginal rate — tick the box if you have a study debt
- A non-resident option, since non-residents are taxed on a different scale with no tax-free threshold
It does not include salary sacrifice, fringe benefits, private health insurance rebates or the Medicare levy surcharge, work-related deductions, or offsets that depend on your personal circumstances. For anything involving those, your accountant’s number is the one to trust.
Why borrowers use a tax calculator
Two reasons this sits on a mortgage broker’s website:
Working out what you can actually afford. Lenders assess your capacity on gross income, but you make repayments out of take-home pay. Knowing the net figure before you start looking prevents the gap between “approved for” and “comfortable with”.
Understanding what HECS costs you. Tick the HECS box and watch the take-home figure move. That difference is money a lender counts as a commitment, which is why a study debt reduces borrowing capacity even though it never stops approval. More on how debts affect borrowing
Common questions
Which financial year does this use?
2026–27 resident rates, including the Medicare levy phase-in.
Can I work out my gross salary from my take-home pay?
Yes — that is the reverse lookup. Type your take-home figure into that box and the calculator solves backwards for the gross salary that produces it.
Does it handle HECS/HELP?
Yes, tick the box. The repayment is applied at the correct marginal rate rather than a flat percentage, which is how it actually works.
Is it accurate for non-residents?
There is a resident tick box. Untick it and the non-resident scale applies — no tax-free threshold and no Medicare levy.
Can I save or print the result?
Yes, there is a Download PDF button. It produces a branded summary you can keep or send to your accountant.
Is this official ATO advice?
No. It is an estimate built on the published rates. For anything binding, check with the ATO or your accountant.
